KWR Racing was first known as KW Motor Sports, started in 2014. Purchased a 1973 Berger Z 28 at the Mecum auction in Indianapolis, Indiana. This was built at the dealership in Grand Rapids Michigan in 1973 as a dealership Race car. This was common in the 60’s and 70’s for dealerships to build race cars for Drag racing.
Purchased on Friday and took the car to Lucas Indianapolis Raceway Park the following Wednesday to run it down the track. The first pass, I was hooked on Drag racing.
We raced a few events in True Street class with NMCA to learn more about Drag racing for the 2015 and 2016 season.
We decided to move up to the open Comp class in NMCA, and decided to build a new Race car to be more competitive.
Started to build 1972 Nova from the ground up in 2017. Took a year to complete the Nova. We started to race a few events in NHRA Super Comp class in 2018. Super Comp is 99% Dragsters. Nova is considered a door car in Super Comp class. Rare for door cars to compete in Super comp class.
Competing in Open Comp class in NMCA, became very competitive in the class. Was nominated Driver of the Year in 2019.
Changed the Team name to KWR Racing in 2020. Started doing events with ( NDRL ) Nostalgia Drag Racing Leage and NHRA.
Racing Pro Gas in NDRL and Super Comp Class in NHRA, we became more competitive in both classes at events.
We learned about different electronics products where needed to be more competitive. Crew Chief Ellen, and her electronics background was a perfect match.
Purchased Crew chief Pro system, and installed Holley Race pack system into the Nova. These along with the Holley MSD grid system, got our tuning in the right direction.
Started racing in more NHRA events, including the US Nationals. Went 3 rounds in 2022 at the US Nationals in a legally plated door car. This was definitely heading in the right direction.
When we found out that a legally plated door car has never won a National event or the US Nationals in NHRA, it was game on.
We started getting help from big Sponsors in 2022, including Sunoco Racing Fuels and others. We are very blessed to have over 14 sponsors supporting KWR Racing today. They all want to be part of history when KWR wins a National event, including the US Nationals.
It’s a tall order to win a National event and the US Nationals against the Dragsters that have been racing for many years longer than KWR. We’re more confident than ever to get the job done in 2025. We want to make history in NHRA. NHRA staff treats KWR like royalty.
Were very fortunate to not only have the best manufacturer in the business supporting KWR, but we also have world champions in NHRA helping us, including world champions in Super Comp class. They also want to see us make history.
Drag racing is very much like a Golf tournament. There are many players, but only one winner. It’s a very difficult sport with the best drivers. When you put a competitor driver in their trailer, after they lose the round to you, they’ll be the first one in your pit with a part or help needed to keep you racing.
Lucas Indianapolis Raceway park is the home track for KWR Racing. Home of the US Nationals and many other great events. We’re very lucky to have this facility in our back yard. Ellen and I are both very proud to be racing in NHRA and NDRL.
